My Imprisonment at Guantanamo, Bagram, and Kandahar: A Harrowing Journey
My name is Mustafa Basir, and I was a prisoner of the United States government for nearly eleven years. I was held captive in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, and Kandahar Airfield in Afghanistan. I was never charged with a crime and never given a trial. My experience in these detention centers was marked by torture, abuse, and isolation. This article will recount my harrowing journey through these notorious detention facilities.
Detention
I was arrested in 2002 in Pakistan and taken to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. While in Bagram, I was subjected to severe mistreatment, including sleep deprivation, stress positions, and beatings. I was also denied access to food, water, and medical care. After six months, I was transferred to Guantanamo Bay, where I spent the next eight years of my life.

Guantanamo was a living hell. The conditions in which we were held were deplorable. We were kept in small, isolated cells that were often overcrowded. The cells were cold and unsanitary, and the food was meager and of poor quality. We were subjected to constant sleep deprivation, lights were kept on 24 hours a day, and there was a constant loud humming sound that made it impossible to sleep.
We were also denied access to medical care. When we got sick or injured, we were often ignored by the guards. We were treated like animals, not human beings.
Torture
In addition to the physical abuse, I was also subjected to torture. I was beaten, waterboarded, and subjected to other forms of abuse. The torture was relentless and designed to break me both physically and psychologically. I was held in a dark cell for months, and I was only allowed out to be tortured. The interrogations were brutal, and I was often threatened with death or harm to my family if I didn't cooperate.
I was tortured for information about Al-Qaeda, but I had no information to give. I was an innocent man who had been caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Release
After nearly eleven years in captivity, I was finally released in 2013. I was sent to Uruguay, where I have been living ever since. I am still recovering from the physical and psychological trauma I experienced during my imprisonment. I have nightmares about being tortured, and I have difficulty sleeping. I also suffer from anxiety and depression.
My imprisonment in Guantanamo, Bagram, and Kandahar was a nightmare. I was tortured, abused, and denied my basic human rights. I am grateful to be free, but I will never forget the horrors I experienced. My story is a reminder of the dark side of the United States.
The United States government must be held accountable for its crimes against humanity. The detention centers in Guantanamo, Bagram, and Kandahar must be closed, and the prisoners must be released. The United States must also provide compensation to the victims of torture and abuse.
I will never be able to erase the memories of my imprisonment, but I will continue to fight for justice. I will continue to tell my story so that the world never forgets the horrors of Guantanamo, Bagram, and Kandahar.
