After graduating from La Salle, Duffy worked for a time in his father's business. However, he soon realized that his true passion was the railroad industry. In 1861, he joined the Pennsylvania Railroad as a clerk.

Career in the Railroad Industry

Duffy quickly rose through the ranks of the Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1869, he was appointed general superintendent of the company's Eastern Division. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the operation of the railroad's lines between Philadelphia and New York City.

Under Duffy's leadership, the Pennsylvania Railroad became one of the most successful railroads in the United States. He introduced a number of innovative operating practices, including the use of standardized equipment and the adoption of a centralized dispatching system. He also oversaw the construction of several new lines, including the Philadelphia and Erie Railroad.

In 1883, Duffy was elected president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He held this position for 17 years, during which time he continued to expand and improve the railroad's operations. He also played a key role in the development of the railroad industry in the United States, serving as president of the American Railway Association from 1892 to 1894.

Investments and Legacy

In addition to his work in the railroad industry, Duffy was also a shrewd investor. He invested in a variety of businesses, including banking, real estate, and manufacturing. He was a major shareholder in the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company, which operated the city's streetcar system.

Duffy's investments helped to make him one of the wealthiest men in Philadelphia. He used his wealth to support a variety of charitable causes, including the Catholic Church, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Duffy died in Philadelphia on October 24, 1909. He was 69 years old. He is buried in The Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia.
