Schubert wrote many of his most famous songs to Mayrhofer's poems.
In 1823, Schubert was appointed the music director of the Vienna Court Opera. He held this position for only two years, but it was a prestigious appointment that helped to establish Schubert's reputation as a composer. In 1824, Schubert wrote his famous song cycle "Die schöne Müllerin" ("The Beautiful Mill-Maid"). This song cycle is considered to be one of the greatest works of the Romantic era.
