He was also influenced by the Romantic movement in literature and philosophy. Schubert's songs often explore themes of love, loss, nature, and death. He was able to express these themes in a way that was both personal and universal.

The Early Years

Franz Schubert was born in Vienna, Austria, on January 31, 1797. He was the son of a schoolteacher and a cook. Schubert showed a talent for music at an early age, and he began taking piano lessons at the age of five. He also sang in the choir at his local church.

In 1808, Schubert entered the Vienna Conservatory. He studied composition with Antonio Salieri, who was one of the most respected composers of the day. Schubert also studied piano with Michael Vogl, who was a famous tenor. Schubert made rapid progress at the conservatory, and he soon began to compose his own songs.

The Mature Years

In 1813, Schubert left the conservatory and began to work as a freelance composer. He wrote a variety of works, including songs, operas, and chamber music. Schubert also taught music to support himself. In 1816, Schubert met the poet Johann Mayrhofer, who became his close friend and collaborator. Schubert wrote many of his most famous songs to Mayrhofer's poems.

In 1823, Schubert was appointed the music director of the Vienna Court Opera. He held this position for only two years, but it was a prestigious appointment that helped to establish Schubert's reputation as a composer. In 1824, Schubert wrote his famous song cycle "Die schöne Müllerin" ("The Beautiful Mill-Maid"). This song cycle is considered to be one of the greatest works of the Romantic era.

Schubert died in Vienna on November 19, 1828, at the age of 31. He was buried in the Zentralfriedhof cemetery in Vienna.
