Peppercorn: The Life of a Locomotive Designer
Arthur Peppercorn was born in 1899 in London, England. He was the son of a railway engineer, and he developed a passion for trains at an early age. Peppercorn began his career in the locomotive industry in 1915, when he joined the Great Northern Railway as an apprentice draughtsman.

Peppercorn quickly rose through the ranks of the Great Northern Railway, and in 1936 he was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer. In this role, he was responsible for the design and construction of the railway's locomotives. Peppercorn's designs were known for their efficiency, reliability, and speed, and they played a major role in the development of the modern railway system.
During World War II, Peppercorn was responsible for the design and construction of locomotives for the war effort. He also played a key role in the development of the "Austerity" locomotives, which were designed to be simple and easy to build. After the war, Peppercorn continued to design locomotives for the Great Northern Railway, and he also worked on the development of new diesel and electric locomotives.
In 1954, Peppercorn was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer of British Railways. In this role, he was responsible for the design and construction of all of the locomotives for the nationalised railway system. Peppercorn's designs for British Railways included the "Deltic" diesel locomotives, which were some of the most powerful and fastest diesel locomotives in the world.
Peppercorn retired from British Railways in 1964. He died in 1982.

- Deltic Diesel: The Deltic Diesel was a diesel locomotive designed for British Railways. It was one of the most powerful and fastest diesel locomotives in the world, and it played a major role in the modernisation of the British railway system.
Legacy
Peppercorn was one of the most influential locomotive designers of the 20th century. His designs were known for their efficiency, reliability, and speed, and they played a major role in the development of the modern railway system.
